Dog T-shirt Design

Dog-Themed T-Shirt Design | Adobe Illustrator

Created a one-color t-shirt design in Adobe Illustrator using heat transfer vinyl. The idea began after seeing a hat in a store with a saying I liked. Since I don’t wear many hats, I decided to take inspiration from the phrase and create my own design by combining playful typography with paw prints, stars, and illustrations of my dogs.

After creating a vinyl decal as a tribute to my dog Aspen, I wanted to create a project that included my other dogs as well. This t-shirt design gave me the opportunity to create something fun and personal while continuing to explore designs that could be produced as physical products.

I experimented with playful typography and eventually changed part of the phrase to a different font to create more visual interest and break up the composition. I also incorporated illustrations of my dogs, making sure the design remained a single-color graphic suitable for heat transfer vinyl.

What I Learned

I learned how important it is to prepare a digital design properly for physical production. The typography was relatively straightforward to prepare, but creating cut-ready outlines of the dogs required more attention. I used Illustrator’s **Expand, Unite, and other Pathfinder tools** to combine and simplify the shapes so the design could be cut successfully with a Cricut.

Applying the design with a heat press was a straightforward process, but I learned that placement is just as important as the design itself. If I created another shirt, I would use a ruler to help ensure the design was centered and straight and would have another person help check the placement before pressing. This project helped me better understand the difference between creating a design that looks good digitally and creating one that is actually ready for physical production.
