Event Poster

Sunbird Cakes Event Poster Redesign

Redesigned an event poster for Sunbird Cakes based on an existing promotional poster for an event happening nearby. I was drawn to the original poster’s simple, vintage-inspired aesthetic, especially the cream background, vintage clown figure, spider graphics, and decorative typography. Rather than completely changing the concept, I used the original direction as a starting point and focused on improving the areas that could make the information easier to read and the design feel more cohesive.

One of my main goals was to create stronger typography hierarchy. The original poster used the same font treatment throughout, which made some of the smaller information difficult to read. I experimented with different typefaces, sizes, and weights to create clearer levels of information while maintaining the vintage character I liked. I also kept the spider illustrations and decorative font elements that initially caught my attention.

I introduced a darker maroon color inspired by the existing Sunbird Cakes branding to add more color and create a stronger visual connection to the company. I also incorporated the Sunbird Cakes logo into the redesign. Because the original black text blended into the cake photograph in some areas, I adjusted the placement, color, and contrast of the typography to improve readability while maintaining the overall vintage feel.

What I Learned

This project taught me how to approach a redesign by identifying what was already working and then making targeted improvements rather than starting completely from scratch. I learned how typography hierarchy, contrast, color, and branding can improve both the appearance and usability of a poster. It also helped me practice making design decisions based on a real-world promotional piece rather than designing only from a blank canvas.
